Happy New Year! Healthy, Happiness and Prosperity to all our customers for 2012!
WHERE HAVE WE BEEN?
Christmas was so wonderful (winefull, foodfull etc.) that getting back in the swing of things has been a little slow! But we are back.
Any new year's resolutions this year? We don't generally have them either, but we can suggest a couple of them that you wouldn't necessarily mind.
- Take an inventory of your wine and beer right now. Many of you have already done this and have noticed a few unused spaces in the rack and on the shelf. Never leave a carboy empty!
- "Like" us on Facebook. We get inspired to go into the social media sphere and throw out an interesting nugget of information. Also, you can find out even faster what's going on around here, ask questions, share your great brewing setups and maybe get to chat with other home wine and beer makers. Let us know how we can do better for you!
- We need to think a season ahead - yes, that means spring! Easter is only 3 months away and the May long weekend is only 4 1/2 months away.
There's some perspective!
Please read the THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY section of this newsletter. There's an issue there that all wine and beer makers should be aware of.
Again, we'd like to thank you for choosing Water'n'Wine Truro for everything wine, beer and spirits. After 17 years in business, we've gotten to know many of you very well and hope to be able to serve you for a long time yet.

FLAVOUR OF THE MONTH - Zinfandel
No, we don't mean the pink, sweet kind. Zinfandel is actually a very dense red grape. It also is considered to be an exotic black grape variety of Croatian origin by The Oxford Companion to Wine. This grape was brought to California in the early 1800s where it has thrived ever since. In fact, many of those who participated in the gold rush of 1849 in California turned to agriculture and grew these grapes. As was then and is still now, Sonoma and Napa made for great places to grow Zinfandel. Due to DNA profiling in the 1990s, it was also discovered, as suspected, that Primitivo grown in southern Italy is exactly the same as Zinfandel.
In the home wine making world, there are a lot of choices for Zinfandel. Of late, we have seen Zinfandel blended with Shiraz for great full-bodied, dry reds. For a great, classic example of Zinfandel, you can try the Selection Estate Series Lodi Old Vines Zinfandel. This fabulous wine will need a little ageing to bring out its best, but you will be rewarded with a dry, vigorous red wine that is very fruit-forward with flavours of black fruits, cherry, leather and spice. We can attest to how good this wine is!

INSTORE EVENTS AND SALES
The big event in January is always Selection Limited Editions! We have received our first shipments of Limited Editions and have called most of you, if not all, to let you know these are in. For those who didn't preorder (what could be considered some of the best wine you can ever make) we do have a few extras. This month's flavours are Washington Meritage and South African Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon. Check out the descriptions on our Limited Edition webpage. These kits are $114.99 each - same price as last year.
Do you have any friends who are thinking about winemaking? We decided to extend our starter kit and 4-week wine deal until the end of January - only $99.99. Can't get a much better start!
Just a little teaser (in case the next newsletter is a little late...!) - we anticipate a World Vineyard sale in very early February. Great time to restock or just keep up with your family and friends! More details to come.

THINK ABOUT IT THIS WAY
Defective buckets are still an issue!
We like to use this space for great little tips to make your wine and beer making better, but we feel the need to bring a recurring (and potentially disastrous) problem to the fore once again.
A couple of years ago we had a problem with our Ropak 30 L pails. The bottoms were actually coming away from the edges. In fact, we've had a handful of people actually have the bottoms come right out! This happened again this weekend and we'd like you to check the bottoms of your buckets immediately.
If on the inside of your pail you see small lines in the bottom crease of your bucket that you cannot clean, do not use your bucket. Please bring the bucket in to us so that we can check it and let you know if there is a problem.
